Jean Paul Gaultier S/S 2001 Black Leather Braided-Front Tank Top

From the S/S 2001 collection of Jean Paul Gaultier, this black leather tank top is among the most technically distinctive pieces of that season. The front is constructed entirely in leather, cut to a deep V-neckline whose raw, unfinished edges are bordered with a chunky braided leather cord. Flanking the centre front, two parallel columns of braided cord are laced through horizontal cuts in the leather, gathering and ruching the hide into a pronounced sculptural relief — a technique that simultaneously structures the bodice and exposes the ground beneath. The raw edges throughout the neckline and armscye are deliberately left unfinished, consistent with the collection's artisanal primitivism as seen on the runway. The back panel is executed in a close-fitting woven textile, offering a contrast of materials; the same braided cord trim continues across the back shoulder straps, unifying the two panels. The silhouette is fitted and slightly flared at the hem, with no visible external closure.
