From the F/W 1994 collection of Comme des Garçons, this maxi dress contrasts two distinct fabrications across a single fluid silhouette. The upper bodice is constructed from a dense, textured felted wool panel, cut with a V-neckline at the front and a shallow scoop at the reverse, its lower edge left with a raw, slightly frayed finish that creates a layered peplum effect over the skirt beneath. Narrow spaghetti straps extend from the bodice and cross or adjust at the back. Below the bodice, a lightweight fluid skirt falls in generous gathered volume from a smocked or elasticated empire waistline, the fabric draping into long, soft vertical folds and extending to full maxi length. The skirt fabric has a faint lustre and semi-sheer quality, falling with ease to a plain hemline. The silhouette is deliberately unstructured at the lower half, contrasting with the more rigid upper panel.
