Saint Laurent F/W 1978 Black Sheer Velvet Polka-Dot Ruffled Midi Skirt And Top Ensemble
From the F/W 1978 collection of Saint Laurent, this two-piece evening ensemble pairs a sheer blouson top with a velvet midi skirt in all-black. The top features a rounded neckline trimmed with a velvet ribbon or binding, a generously gathered bodice in semi-transparent fabric, full-length bishop sleeves that taper to velvet-trimmed cuffs, and a bloused silhouette cinched at the waist by a narrow velvet sash belt. The skirt is cut from a crushed or devore velvet with a lustrous pile surface, falling to midi length with an asymmetric draped front panel and a cascading lateral ruffle that runs from hip to hem. At the hemline, a wide flounce in sheer polka-dot fabric — woven or printed dots on a transparent ground — adds further volume and introduces a second texture in dialogue with the velvet. The hem is finished with a narrow rolled edge on the flounce. The ensemble is documented in a runway photograph consistent with the stated period.
