Lolita Lempicka F/W 1997 Slate Blue Floral Velvet Devoré Buttoned Midi Dress
From the F/W 1997 collection of Lolita Lempicka, this midi dress is executed in a velvet devoré fabric, its slate-blue ribbed ground supporting an all-over floral and foliate motif in cut pile that reads in tones of deep burgundy, copper and rose. The silhouette is body-conscious throughout, tapering at the waist and following the figure to a straight hem that falls below the knee. A deep V-neckline is framed by a ruffled, lettuce-edged collar that folds softly back from the décolletage; the same undulating finish appears at the cuffs of the long, fitted sleeves. The centre front closes with a single column of small, dark buttons running the full length of the dress. The reverse is unadorned, with a centre-back seam following the contour of the body. The close-up detail reveals the interplay of the devoré technique: areas of dense, lustrous pile sit against the crinkled, semi-transparent ribbed ground, giving the fabric a richly textured, relief-like quality.
