Junya Watanabe F/W 1998 Comme Des Garçons Black Accordion-Pleated Sleeveless Midi Dress

From the F/W 1998 collection of Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons, this dress is an exercise in structured pleating carried to architectural extremes. The garment is constructed entirely in fine accordion pleats that run vertically from a gathered, cowl-like neckline — folded and tucked at each shoulder point to form angular cap-like projections — down to a midi-length hem. The silhouette is tent-shaped and voluminous, widening dramatically from the neckline toward the lower body. Approximately two-thirds of the way down, a horizontal seam creates a distinct tier, below which the pleats open further, lending the hem a pointed, irregular handkerchief-like finish. The dress is sleeveless, with open shoulder cutouts defined by the structured pleat folds. There is no conventional closure; the pleated construction appears self-supporting.
