John Galliano S/S 2000 Black Chevron-Pintucked Sheer-Hem Slip Dress
From the S/S 2000 collection of John Galliano, this slip dress exemplifies the house's mastery of bias-cut evening construction. The garment is suspended from two fine spaghetti straps and opens at a shallow V-neckline. The bodice and column skirt are worked entirely in a repeating chevron pintuck pattern, the tucks radiating outward from the centre front and converging at the sides to sculpt the silhouette without boning or interfacing. From approximately knee level the structured pintucked body dissolves into multiple godets of sheer, loosely layered fabric — dark at the upper register and becoming translucent at the hem, revealing a pale nude underlayer beneath. The overall line is narrow through the torso and flares gently to the floor, the asymmetric movement of the sheer godet panels lending a fluid, almost liquid quality to the skirt.
