Helmut Lang F/W 1990 Black Quilted-Back Button-Front Mini Dress
From the F/W 1990 collection of Helmut Lang, this sleeveless dress exemplifies the house's rigorous approach to material contrast and precision tailoring. The front panel is executed in a smooth, tightly woven dark fabric and features a deep V-neckline with a small notched detail at the apex, below which four large dark buttons fasten the placket to the hem. The cut is slim and body-conscious throughout, tapering through the waist and releasing slightly at the hip line, with discreet welt pockets at the lower front. The rear bodice and upper back are constructed entirely in a quilted, padded satin-like fabric — rendered in horizontal and diagonal channel stitching — creating a deliberate textural opposition to the plain front. This quilted panel is secured at the waist by an integrated self-fabric belt in the same lustrous material, fastening with a small silver-tone rectangular buckle at centre back. The skirt falls in a straight silhouette to above the knee.
